Today IS the Day You Can Turn Your Relationship Around
But even though today is Valentine's Day, ANY day is a great day to start turning your relationship around a mending the broken dreams and ending the heartbreak. Because Love isn't about one special day a year; Love is about consistently being someone worthy of your significant other.
Yes, you read that right: "Worthy of your significant other!" You see, the interesting thing about love is that the more you put into a relationship, the more you get out of it. If you sit on the couch everyday watching TV instead of thinking of thoughtful ways to show you care, you are investing more time in an object that will never be able to love you back. If you took just one of the romantic ideas portrayed on a soap opera (or even reversed one of the train wrecked relationships on some court show) and did that for your spouse, they will notice.
If you spend all day hard at work trying to provide material things for your loved ones, you are giving them objects that will never love them back. Why do we do that?!? Your kids might appreciate having the trendiest clothes and the coolest video games, but do you think those things will truly make them happy? Don't you think they would be happier with the security that a loving relationship with a parent can provide? And what about your spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend? Which do you think they will love more: A dozen roses or a $2 card with 5 or 6 lines of truly thoughtful and heartfelt words that you wrote yourself?
But just doing these things once, one day out of the year will eventually make them meaningless. They will just become an annual token of appreciation...like the canned ham you might get every Christmas from the Boss so he can say he cares about his employees. Isn't it much more satisfying when you get consistent praise and attention? Wouldn't you like your boss more if he or she on a weekly or daily basis told you about the good work you did and actually meant it? You only spend 40 hours a week with your boss, so imagine how much more meaningful it would be to your significant other if you actually made themm feel SIGNIFICANT!
So yes, today is Valentine's Day, but do yourself a favor: leave the roses in the car, get a cheap card, write something meaningful in it that really says how much appreciate anything about your lover, and surprise them with the flowers tomorrow. Then keep on showing love, affection, and appreciation everyday after that because Love is a journey, not a destination. There is no retirement from Love.
